Barca win Catalan Super Cup on penalties

Barcelona regained the Catalan Super Cup after defeating Espanyol 4-2 on penalties following on from a scoreless draw.

Barca shot-stopper Jasper Cillessen was the hero for the Blaugrana in the shootout, with his save from Jose Manuel Jurado confirming the victory.

Ernesto Valverde rotated heavily for the annual event with runouts for Ousmane Dembele, Aleix Vidal, Paco Alcacer, Denis Suarez, Yerry Mina and a host of youth players.

However, Suarez picked up a groin injury in the first half and they did not create many opportunities, with Vidal and Alcacer only testing Espanyol goalkeeper Pau Lopez late on.

Pablo Piatti, Adria Pedrosa and Alex Lopez all had opportunities to win the game for Quique Sanchez Flores's side but were all denied by the in-form Cillessen.

Cillessen – who was famously substituted off for the Netherlands ahead of a penalty shootout in the 2014 World Cup – was the penalty shootout hero, after Sergi Darder had previously blazed his spot-kick over for Espanyol.
