Raphael Varane has hinted some of his Real Madrid teammates are not sufficiently motivated in La Liga matches after defeat at Espanyol.
The French defender played the full 90 minutes as Madrid went down to a late Gerard Moreno goal, and insisted the ‘Madrid shirt has to motivate you’ regardless of the competition.
“The Madrid shirt has to motivate you regardless of what the match is,” Varane told reporters.
“Obviously the Champions League motivates every player but you cannot give up on league matches and lose in this fashion, we are proud and we are Real Madrid.
“We cannot throw in the towel in the league, but we are lacking consistency and that has been a problem for us over the course of the season.
“We play well in one half but not as good in the other, you cannot allow that to happen when you are at this club.”
