La Liga Wk25: Valencia keep pressure

Valencia kept the pressure on Real Madrid with victory over Real Sociedad in La Liga Week 25, while Athletic Bilbao plunged Malaga further adrift.

Hosting Sunday’s first game were Villarreal, who bounced back with a 1-0 win against Getafe.

The Yellow Submarine had gone three games without a win, and they rode their luck as Sergio Asenjo denied Los Azulones twice from the penalty spot.

Ultimately, however, Enes Unal’s third-minute finish was enough to move them above Sevilla and into fifth place.

Athletic, meanwhile, ended a worse run of form, defeating basement boys Malaga 2-1.

Markel Susaeta’s first goal since November and a Mikel San Jose effort secured Los Leones a first victory in six.

Youssef En-Nesyri had opened the scoring for Malaga, but the attacker turned hero to villain as he had a penalty saved and was sent off late on, leaving the Andalusians seven points from safety.

Finally, Valencia responded to Madrid’s big win against Alaves on Saturday by beating La Real 2-1.

Santi Mina’s brace either side of half-time – sandwiched by a Mikel Oyarzabal equaliser – not only saw him surpass double figures in La Liga but keep Los Che just two points behind the champions in fourth spot.
