Messi & Suarez take down Girona

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were at their brilliant best as Barcelona demolished Girona 6-1 on Saturday, in the first-ever Catalan derby of its kind.

Messi scored twice, Suarez went one better with a hat-trick and Philippe Coutinho netted a stunning strike to provisionally send Barca 10 points clear at the top of La Liga.

Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele were in from the start as Camp Nou bore witness to the maiden Derbi Catala between the Blaugrana and Girona in the Spanish top flight.

The Blanquivermell came into the game just four points off a European spot, and it showed as Portu capitalised on a mix-up between Samuel Umtiti and Marc-Andre ter Stegen just three minutes in.

Yet just two minutes later, Messi's through ball split the Girona defence and found Suarez, who slotted home for a quick-fire equaliser.

The Argentine had a lob cleared off the line, but he made no mistake when he received a layoff from the No 9, before rounding a string of defenders and blasting in the finish.

Messi soon bagged his brace, firing a free kick under the visitors' wall and into Bono's bottom-left corner.

Just before half-time, Barca produced one of the team goals of the season, with the No 10 taking over from Nelson Semedo, before slipping a perfectly-weighted pass to Coutinho, whose cutback was prodded in by Suarez.

Dembele struck the wrong side of the far post, but Coutinho managed to curl home an unstoppable strike from 25 yards out for 5-1, followed by Suarez turning in the Frenchman's deep cross.

The crossbar denied Thomas Vermaelen from marking his comeback with a goal, but Ter Stegen made amends for his misjudgment at the start of the game with an impressive double stop right at the death.
