Xabi Alonso tax case reopened

The Spanish courts have reopened an investigation into alleged tax fraud by former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso, it is reported.

The case against the former Spain international had been shelved in January 2017 but due to a punishment for Javier Mascherano in a similar case, Diario AS state it has now been relaunched.

The charges relate alleged financial offenses by Alonso in the years between 2010 and 2012, when he sold his image rights to a company in Madeira (Portugal) for €5m, but which were originally deemed to not have criminal liability.

It was alleged these monies were illegally directed away from the Spanish state and a court case is now set to reopen against the player, who ended his playing career last year.
