Gerard Moreno’s second-half finish was enough for Espanyol to end successive defeats and condemn Getafe to their first loss in five matches.

In a dull encounter, with chances few and far between for each side, the striker’s flick from Pablo Piatti’s cross in the 55th minute decided the game.

The match remained devoid of any real creativity and was disrupted by constant fouls and free-kicks, as seen by the nine yellow cards handed out in total.

Interestingly, Espanyol’s game against Real Betis earlier this month also saw them win 1-0 thanks to a 55th-minute Gerard goal.

The Catalans now leapfrog Getafe into 12th, courtesy of a head-to-head advantage.
