Robinho handed 9-year jail sentence

Former Real Madrid forward Robinho has been handed a nine-year prison sentence after being found guilty of rape in a Milanese disco in 2013.

The 33-year-old Brazilian was playing for Italian club Milan the time of the incident, which took place on January 22, 2013.

The Tribunal in Milan this evening found Robinho and five other men guilty of the gang-rape of a 22-year-old Albanian woman.

Although this is a guilty verdict and a nine-year prison sentence awarded, the Italian justice system includes several levels of appeal.

Because of that, the verdict is effectively put on hold until the appeals process is completed and no sentence will be enforced until then.

Robinho is currently in Brazil playing for Atletico Mineiro having scored 35 goals across 135 appearances for Madrid between 2005 and 2008, when he joined Manchester City.
