Barca goalless in Greece

Barcelona were forced to wait another fortnight to book their place in the Champions League last 16 after a 0-0 draw with Olympiakos on Tuesday.

Silvio Proto kept Barca at bay in the first half with a string of top saves, but the Catalans struggled to test the Olympiakos goalkeeper after the break, in what was a scrappy encounter at the Karaiskakis Stadium.

Javier Mascherano dropped out at the last minute of the Blaugrana's 2-0 win at Athletic Bilbao over the weekend and was a doubt for the trip to Greece, but the defender nonetheless replaced Gerard Pique, who was banned.

Elsewhere, Nelson Semedo came in at right-back, allowing Sergi Roberto to move into midfield and Paulinho kept his place after his goal at San Mames.

Barca only needed to better Sporting CP’s result against Juventus in order to reach the last 16, but Proto set the tone early on, deflecting Messi’s half-volley off-target.

The No 10 then veered to the left of Proto’s goal but sent his finish inches wide of the Belgian, before Samuel Umtiti’s backpass to an unsuspecting Marc-Andre ter Stegen almost gifted Olympiakos the lead.

No-one could get near Messi, who approached Proto and pulled a shot a goal, but the custodian blocked it.

The Greek side did eventually threaten, although Kostas Fortunis’ half-volley from a diagonal ball was just about caught by Ter Stegen

Chances came at a premium after the break, yet Messi scuffed his finish wide from a couple of yards out after he was teed up by Suarez.

Suarez had yet to score in Europe, and he was out of luck again, when he tried to lob Proto with a floated effort, only for it to clip the bar and go out for a goal kick.

The result marked Barca’s first group game without a goal in five years but left them still on track to qualify for the next round.
