Espanyol secure first win over Celta

Goals from Gerard Moreno and Pablo Piatti moved Espanyol out of La Liga’s bottom three with a 2-1 win over Celta Vigo on Monday night.

The Catalan club have previously been without a win in their opening three games and despite conceding the lion’s share of possession and chances, secured the victory at the RCDE Stadium.

Moreno opened the scoring in the ninth minute after Leo Baptistao surging run into the box before laying it back to the striker to produce a powerful finish from the edge of the area.

Celta’s high defensive line was exposed fourteen minutes later as Jose Manuel Jurado raced through before playing in Piatti, who doubled the lead with a well-placed effort.

Andreu Fontas headed home from Pione Sisto’s cross in the 69th minute to make it a nervy end for Quique Sanchez Flores’s side, but they held on for the three points.
