Bartomeu heralds start to ‘new era’

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has heralded the strong start to a ‘new era’ at the club under Coach Ernesto Valverde.

The Blaugrana have won their opening four league games alongside defeating Juventus 3-0 in the Champions League in an impressive month for the new boss.

“We're embarking on a new era with him and we have a lot of faith in his abilities,” Bartomeu told an interview with TV3.

“He is intelligent and strongly believes in Barcelona and our style, he manages the games and so far he has shown why we chose him.

“The players are really happy with him and he’s earned the respect and gratitude of all the club’s fans in the space of a few weeks.

“Everything is going well so far in La Liga and in the Champions League, as a team we are growing and we will continue to grow.”

Bartomeu also discussed the club’s summer signings which were criticised in some quarters for a lack of ambition and forward-planning.

“There was a strategy in place for our summer,”

“Paulinho? He was the midfielder we needed – a player with experience, a leader with the Brazilian national team…he will add a lot to our team.

“His showing at Getafe was excellent and there will be a lot more to come I am sure.

“Deulofeu? He has returned as a better player and now he can bring us what he has learnt and how he has developed.”
