Formula One driver Fernando Alonso said he was ‘born to be a Real Madrid supporter’ after becoming an honorary club member.
The 36-year-old Asturian, whose father was born in Madrid, has had his future in the driving sport under speculation and is due in the Royal Box at the Bernabeu for future matches.
“I’m always unsure what to answer when people ask me why I support this club, but it’s because I was just born to be a Real Madrid supporter,” Alonso told the assembled gathering.
“This is an incredibly special day for me, I do not miss anything that happens at this club – my father was from Madrid and he instilled in me the values of this great club, my house always was full of football growing up.”
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez added: "Fernando is a pioneer, a genius who achieved great things for our country that nobody else had ever previously achieved.
“All Madridismo sends you our love and admiration; this recognition is a sign of our gratitude for your commitment and loyalty, you are an incredible ambassador for this club.”
