A first half header from veteran striker Aritz Aduriz was enough to earn Athletic Bilbao a Basque derby victory at Eibar.
The 36-year-old – who has already netted three goals this season in qualification for the Europa League group stages – powered home a header from Inaki Williams’s cross six minutes before the break.
The introduction of former Manchester United winger Bebe at the break galvanised the hosts and they enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and chances in the second period.
Athletic Club goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, called up to the Spanish national team, was forced into making a string of fine saves including two quickfire stops from Kike Garcia.
Eibar ended the match with ten men after midfielder Joan Jordan was shown a second yellow card in stoppage time.
