Madrid clubs top UEFA rankings

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are the top two clubs in UEFA rankings, with Diego Simeone’s men leapfrogging Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Atletico’s ranking has been significantly boosted over the past four seasons in particular with two Champions League final appearances and defeats at the semi final and the quarter final stages.

Indeed since Los Rojiblancos return to the Champions League in 2013, their city rivals Real are the only side to knock them out of the competition.

When Simeone took over the club in 2011, they were ranked 23 in Europe while Manchester United and Chelsea were in the top three – both are now outside the top ten.

Barcelona are ranked third in the list with Bayern completing the top four, and Italian champions Juventus rising to fifth.
