Abidal to become Barca ambassador

Former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal is set to return to the club in an ambassadorial role, following in the footsteps of Ronaldinho.

The French defender made over 200 appearances between 2007 and 2013 for the Catalans but after being diagnosed with cancer and undergoing a liver transplant, he was critical of his treatment by the club.

He was part of Joan Laporta’s presidential campaign in 2015, which would have seen him named as sporting director, but lost out to Josep Maria Bartomeu’s campaign.

"It makes me really happy to be officially part of the club again,” Abidal said.

"We have been talking for a long time, and today was the day. It's an honour to represent this club, the values are important.

"As an ambassador, I will try to represent the club in the best way possible in Europe, Asia, the Middle East… wherever and whatever the club want."
