Valverde: Back to Barca way

New Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde has revealed that he plans to bring the Blaugrana closer to their ‘tiki-taka’ roots.

Speaking at his official unveiling on Thursday, Valverde also stated he was ready for “an exciting challenge” and “optimistic” about Lionel Messi’s new contract.

“I know what I’ve let myself in for,” explained the former Athletic Bilbao Coach.

“I know the demand here is very high, you see it just by going around the museum.

“This demand makes the challenge that I’ll have even harder, but it’s an exciting challenge.

“I don’t consider the drawing board so important. I’m aware of Barca’s style. I know it, I have to adapt to it, but my idea will always be to go deeper in that style and give it a go.

“I’m optimistic about Messi’s renewal. He’s the best player I’ve ever seen, coaching him will be a unique experience.

“I don’t think that Barca moved away from their style under Luis Enrique, I followed them recognisable. I have to be grateful to him.

“It’s best that we start strongly. The Supercopa is an important incentive. Our rivalry with Madrid makes it an extra-special match for preparation.

“Iniesta’s an important player for the team and very important for the club.

“I didn’t think about saying ‘yes’ to Barca until Saturday or Sunday. I spoke to Robert for the first time on Monday.

“The hardest thing will be dealing with Press conferences! I’ll try to make our conflicts affect the players as little as possible.

“I’ve had some great Coaches like Cruyff, Clemente, Heynckes and Irureta and I’ve faced ones like Luis Enrique and Pep.

“Athletic are the club of my life. They’re my family. I had a hard time leaving.”
