Girona were made to put the champagne on ice for their first ever promotion to La Liga after a 3-1 loss in a Catalan derby at struggling Gimnastic.
Los Albirrojos required only a draw to clinch a memorable promotion to the top flight but threw away a lead as their neighbours secured victory to move out of the relegation zone.
Pablo Machin’s side only need one draw from their remaining two matches – Zaragoza (home), Cordoba (away) – to seal their place among Spain’s elite, with third-placed Getafe also required to win their remaining two matches.
Pablo Maffeo – on loan from Manchester City – gave Girona the lead but Manu Barreiro equalised for the hosts before a double from Nigerian striker Ikechukwu Uche.
Levante have already been promoted to the top flight, while Gimnastic leapfrogged Alcorcon, Mallorca and Elche to move out of the relegation zone at the other end of the table.
