La Liga final-day permutations

The destination of the La Liga title and Europa League places will finally be decided on this 2016-17 final day.

Real Madrid and Barcelona are the only teams left in the title race, but Los Blancos lead their arch-rivals by three points at the top and only need to avoid defeat to Malaga – managed by club legend Michel Gonzalez – to win their first crown in five years.

However, Barca have the superior head-to-head thanks to a 1-1 draw and 2-1 victory in each of the Clasicos this season, and Zinedine Zidane’s side can yet be stunned if they lose to Malaga and the Catalans beat Eibar.

With Atletico Madrid and Sevilla also confirmed as Champions League qualifiers, Villarreal, Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad must address La Liga’s order for the Europa League.

Villarreal are fifth on 64 points and will make sure of the tournament’s group stage if they win at eastern rivals Valencia.

Their 3-2 aggregate lead in previous meetings with Athletic this season also means they can stay fifth if Los Leones draw at Atleti and Real Sociedad achieve the same outcome at Celta Vigo.

However, Athletic and La Real are both trailing by a solitary point and can leapfrog the Yellow Submarine, although the latter can only do so if their Basque rivals register an inferior result.

Seventh place will still be good enough for the Europa League, providing Barcelona beat Alaves in the Copa del Rey final next weekend, but the team in question will have to contest the third qualifying round.
