Bartomeu drops Valverde hint

Josep Maria Bartomeu has confirmed that Barcelona’s new Coach will be announced on May 29 and refused to discount Ernesto Valverde.

Reports over the weekend suggested Valverde had agreed a two-year contract to succeed Luis Enrique, and Bartomeu hinted the Athletic Bilbao boss was Barca’s man as his “contract is expiring”.

“Eibar played very well, but our players worked hard to win and succeeded. Now’s the time to congratulate the champions,” the President said after the game

“We had good phases of play, some not so much. We failed at some points in the game, but we managed to win our last few games and reached the final matchday [with a chance of winning the title], but ultimately we didn’t win it.

“We must thank Luis Enrique for these years of effort and self-determination. Our doors are open to him, but we still have the Copa del Rey, which is an important trophy. We have a week to prepare for it and we’ll focus on it.

“On Monday 29th, we’ll have a board meeting and announce the name of the new Coach.

“Valverde? He’s a Coach whose contract is expiring…”
