Barca comeback not enough

Barcelona came back from 2-0 down to beat Eibar 4-2 on Sunday, but their turnaround was overshadowed by Real Madrid winning the title at Malaga.

Takashi Inui’s brace and a clutch of Barca misses seemingly ruined Luis Enrique’s last League game as boss of the Blaugrana, but four goals in the final half-hour ensured the hosts could afford a penalty save on Lionel Messi, even if it wasn’t enough for a third straight crown.

The Catalans were without Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano, so Marlon continued alongside Samuel Umtiti in central defence, as a win against Eibar and Madrid defeat at Malaga were needed for them to defend their crown.

A tribute for the outgoing Enrique was staged by fans before kick-off, but the Catalans seemed subdued and taken aback by the occasion.

Indeed, a switch of play in just the seventh minute found Inui at the far post, and the Japanese guided a first-time finish home.

Luis Suarez was guilty of fluffling several one-on-ones with Yoel Rodriguez, and when he opted to tee up Messi for a tap-in, the Argentine dinked wide.

With that, Inui punished Barca a second time at the other end, firing in a half-volley off the bar from Sergi Enrich’s flick-on.

However, just two minutes later, the comeback was on. Neymar’s angled shot hit the post but was scuffed into his own net by David Junca.

A controversial moment saw Jordi Alba go down on his own in the Basques’ box yet awarded a penalty, but justice was served as Messi’s spot-kick was pushed over by Yoel.

Nonetheless, a corner flicked on by substitute Paco Alcacer was stabbed home by Suarez at the back post.

Ander Capa then took out Neymar from behind for his second booking and another Barca penalty, which Messi again blasted to the right and Yoel got a hand to, but it went in.

The No 10 notched up his second goal in stoppage time, embarking on a mazy dribble and finishing into Yoel’s bottom left for the consolation prize of the Pichichi.
