Athletic Club Bilbao moved into sixth place and back into the European qualifying places with a narrow 2-1 win over Real Betis.

Aritz Aduriz opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 53rd minute, firing low into the left corner before an Iker Muniain header doubled the lead on the hour mark.

However, within three minutes Ruben Castro pulled one back for Los Verdiblancos after Alex Martinez’s effort was only parried by Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Victor Sanchez del Amo’s side pushed for an equaliser – Ruben Pardo’s effort inside the area was deflected inches wide of goal by a despairing Athletic challenge but the Basque side held on for a vital three points.

Ernesto Valverde’s side now move one point above Real Sociedad and one behind Villarreal in fifth.
