Month out for Pepe?

Real Madrid defender Pepe could be facing a month out after breaking two ribs in Saturday’s Derbi draw with Atletico.

Pepe was replaced midway through the second half at the Santiago Bernabeu after a heavy collision with teammate Toni Kroos, and Madrid confirmed on their official website that the Portuguese suffered “fractures in the seventh and eighth ribs in his left rib cage”.

He told Marca prior to undergoing tests that the injury “hurt a lot” and is now set to miss both the Clasico and Champions League quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich.

Raphael Varane is also expected to be out for the month of April, leaving Sergio Ramos and Nacho Fernandez as Madrid’s only recognised centre-backs.
