Sampaoli seeks ‘rebellion & courage’

Jorge Sampaoli is seeking a “rebellious and courageous” Sevilla when they face Real Madrid in the European Super Cup on Tuesday.

Sampaoli oversaw a perfect first preseason as Sevilla won all six of their friendly games prior to their Super Cup clash in Norway, and the Coach instructed his players to show no fear against Madrid, despite the Andalusians’ lack of preparation.

“When you play these kinds of games, it’s obviously always good to win, but more important is how [you win],” he said at a Press conference.

“We need more time to implement the style of play we want, and we don’t want to delay this any longer.

“The team need more time [to gel]. Ganso came with an injury, [Gabriel] Mercado arrived recently … So it’s important to know that, in this new squad, that the most important thing the team has is great enthusiasm, the enthusiasm to transfer what we did in friendlies against a big club.

“It bothers me when [my team are] dominated on a pitch. I want us to approach the game with rebellion and courage.

“I don’t think [Madrid’s absences] diminish their ability as a whole, although they are missing some crucial players.

“We must pose a game, in which we carry the weight [of the task at hand], but I don’t think their absences will prove influential

“[Adil] Rami arrived recently and has had virtually no training, although in the future he’ll be very important.

“Ganso is also recovering from his injury, but it’ll be difficult for him to participate.”
