Arda apologises to Turkey fans

Barcelona midfielder Arda Turan has apologised to Turkey fans after the country’s 1-0 defeat to Croatia in the first match of Group D at Euro 2016 on Sunday.

Arda was replaced on the hour at Parc des Princes by Burak Yilmaz as his Barca struggles continued, and the Turkey captain admitted he let his teammates down as “I didn’t play well”.

“I didn’t play well, but my colleagues fought hard. I apologise to the Turkish people,” the midfielder said after the game.

“Croatia are a good team, we did everything possible and could’ve got a draw, but we keep our heads held high, can still overcome the group stage and achieve something important.

“We have to be united. We played well today, but sometimes it’s the individuals that make the difference. I hope we play better against Spain and beat them.”
