Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez has backed Atletico Madrid to win the Champions League soon as “the work they’re doing” deserves it.
Raul was among the Madrid greats who featured in Sunday’s Corazon Classic charity match against Ajax, and he was asked about the achievements of his former teammate Zinedine Zidane, who guided Los Blancos to La Undecima, plus their arch-rivals.
“I expect Atletico to win a European cup in the next few years because with the work they’re doing, surely they’ll win it soon,” he said after the game.
“I’m very happy and glad. It was emotional to have felt the affection of the fans and seen my ex-teammates.
“I’m happy with [Zidane]. He decided to start from the bottom as a Coach with Real Madrid Castilla, and congratulations must be given [for his work] this season.
“He couldn’t have had a better season, so I have to wish him well.
“We’re all very happy because the Champions League is the most important thing, although we must not detract ourselves from the League.
“You have to give good marks to team. Now we have to rest because next season the objectives will be the same or higher.”
