Bartomeu hails ‘herculean effort’

Josep Maria Bartomeu paid tribute to Barcelona for their “herculean effort” in Sunday’s Copa del Rey triumph against Sevilla.

Barca were forced to play with 10 men for an hour at the Vicente Calderon, until a red card for Ever Banega on the 92nd minute gave them the confidence to ultimately secure a second straight double thanks to extra-time goals from Jordi Alba and Neymar.

“We won through force and herculean effort,” the President said after the game.

“We managed to overcome all adversities, our players believed in the win all times and that was the key us winning.

“We played a very serious game, both against 11 and 10, we were very confident and showed a great attitude.

“Everyone did their bit, we gave it our best shot and it was worth a lot in the end.

“The second half was ours. We created some clear-cut chances and felt that we were going to win, and in extra time the team were spectacular.

“[Sunday] is a very happy day for Barca fans and one that will be written in history.

“[On Esteladas being waved], we already knew that our fans were respectful, and they proved it again.

“I must thank the socios for the support they gave the team in every minute of the game. They transmitted strength and drive to the players.

“Finally, I want to congratulate Iniesta for the great match he had … and all Cules!”
