Mendilibar: Eibar must aim higher

Jose Luis Mendilibar feels Eibar must raise their expectations if they are to end the season on a high note ahead of Saturday’s derby against Real Sociedad.

Eibar have gone eight games without a win – a run which has seen them badly fall away from the top seven in La Liga and risk imploding at a critical time of the season – but Mendilibar is confident his side only need to aim higher as opposed to only settling for survival.

“We must change our mindset,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“I told this to my players after the game against Real Madrid.

“Safety, although not achieved mathematically, will come later.

“The objective now is to reach 45 points, which isn’t impossible. It’s a feasible objective.

“We’re more aware of our rivals’ results than our own, when the most important thing is ourselves.

“You can have a good season but it’s remembered as a bad one if you end up 15th or 16th in the table.

“We must try to stay where we are now or go higher in the table but only think of ourselves.

“What Real have done is hard to achieve, such as winning at Sevilla and beating Barcelona.

“They’ve done things right and attacked and defended well. They kept a clean sheet against Barcelona played Sevilla with one less.

“They’re on a good run of results while we’re not, but hopefully we can give joy to the fans of Ipurua as it’s been a while since they saw a win here.”
