Valverde issues Athletic rallying cry

Ernesto Valverde has made it clear that Athletic Bilbao will go all out in their Europa League quarter-final second leg at Sevilla after Thursday’s 2-1 defeat.

Aritz Aduriz’s 32nd strike of the season was cancelled out by away goals from Thimothee Kolodziejczak and Vicente Iborra to leave Athletic’s hopes of a first European final since 2012 hanging by a thread, but Valverde vowed his side would go on the offensive in the return fixture.

“The tie isn’t over, that I have no doubt. We’ll go to Seville to progress,” the Coach said after the game.

“If something has our team is always facing the parties intend to pull forward. As we always do, I have no doubt that this time will also be like that.

“Our start to the game wasn’t very good. They started better, but as the game went on, we took control.

“It seemed that we were closer to scoring, but their equaliser surprised us by how it came about, and it’s brought us to where we are.

“I feel we deserved more, despite the difficulties. Iker was especially frustrated by his significant role [in their equaliser].

“Everyone’s liable for the mistakes they make, but they’re also liable for the answer we give [to correcting the mistake].”
