Alonso: Madrid can beat anyone

Xabi Alonso makes former club Real Madrid one of the favourites for the Champions League as they can ‘beat anyone over two legs.’

Alonso, now with Bayern Munich, was part of the Madrid side that won the trophy in 2014, the club’s much-desired 10th, and spoke to Goal about this year’s competition prior to Los Blancos quarter-final with Wolfsburg.

“Everything can change in the Champions League,” Alonso said, AS reports.

“It’s a big goal for them as they have a very difficult League with the difference that separates them from Barcelona.

“Madrid, with the players they have, can beat any team in the world over two legs. They create a lot of chances and play good football so for me they’re one of the favourites for the Champions League.”

Barcelona are the holders of the trophy and while Alonso wouldn’t put them ahead of the other teams in contention, he agreed they’re on par with last season.

“I don’t know if they have an advantage, but they’re playing well, at least as good as last year,” he noted.
