Damiao overlooked by Betis again

Leandro Damiao must continue to wait for his Real Betis after being omitted again for Saturday’s visit of Sporting Gijon in La Liga.

The former Santos striker has yet to make an appearance for Los Nervionenses since arriving on a free transfer a fortnight ago, but Juan Merino insisted his absence was purely fitness-related, having not kicked a ball in over three months.

“I’m required to name a squad and call up who I think I can win us games and contribute from the bench,” the Coach said at a Press conference.

“Joaquin [Sanchez] fared better during the week. He had an injury which prevented him from being 100 percent.

“He’s still a little bit behind [full fitness], but he’s trained very well.

“We have no excuse to get the most of our possibilities [to win the game].

“We must take advantage of every game we play at home.

“We always dedicate wins to our fans. We must try to live up to our fans’ expectations.

“They don’t deserve the team to be fighting against relegation, but they know they must help the team at all times.”
