Collet: Espanyol feel cheated

Joan Collet has admitted that Espanyol “feel cheated” by their fans following their controversial choice of banners against Barcelona on Wednesday.

Espanyol find themselves in hot water with Spain’s Anti-Violence Commission after a section of their supporters displayed anti-Barca and anti-Gerard Pique banners during the side’s 2-0 defeat at Cornella-El Prat in the Copa del Rey last 16.

“We apologise to anyone who may have been offended,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

“However, we do not share the sentiments expressed by a section of our fans.

“I sympathise with the club’s image because it has always been exemplary.

“I wish to make it very clear that the club did not know the content of the banners or the existence of most of them. We feel like we’ve been cheated.

“We could not remove the banners as they were not fixed anywhere and it was recommended to us that we did not intervene in the stands during the match.”
