Barca, Espanyol in tunnel row

The bad-tempered Copa del Rey derby between Barcelona and Espanyol spilled over into the tunnel with Luis Suarez cited by the referee.

AS reports referee Juan Martinez Munuera named the Uruguayan in his report on the game as waiting for the Espanyol players after the final whistle and describing one of them as ‘a waste of space.’

The insult allegedly sparked a confrontation between the players, staff and officials of the clubs, with security also involved in separating the parties.

It’s suggested that Suarez will face a ban for his actions but it’s likely to only include Cup games, though if the ban exceeds four matches, it will stretch to League games.

The Catalan Press, meanwhile, quotes an unnamed Espanyol player as threatening violence against a Barca counterpart, possibly Suarez.

Espanyol had two players sent off in the 4-1 first leg defeat, including Pape Diop, reportedly for profane comments directed at Suarez.
