Abelardo: Sporting need signings

Abelardo doesn’t believe Sporting Gijon can continue with their bare bones squad, a result of the transfer embargo under which the club has been operating.

Financial issues have meant Sporting’s signings have been severely limited but Abelardo managed to get the side promoted from the Segunda last season yet, after seeing his side lost at home to Getafe, suggested something has to change.

“It’s been like this for two years and we’re at a huge disadvantage compared to the rest,” Marca quotes the Coach as saying as the January transfer window opened.

“The team needs reinforcements, that’s the reality.”

Regarding the match itself, Abelardo admitted the players currently at the club are worried after a defeat that dropped Los Rojiblancos into the bottom three.

“We were better in the first half but scored only once and Getafe were stronger in the second and scored twice,” he complained.

“This is the Primera and teams have quality players. I’ll defend my players to the death but to compete we have to give 300%, if not then the rest beat us.

“The players are very concerned. Getafe had three shots on goal, the penalty and the two they scored. Experience is a degree and this team hasn’t taken that into the Primera, starting with myself.”
