‘Athletic uncomfortable vs Las Palmas’

Ernesto Valverde conceded Athletic Bilbao “weren’t comfortable” in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Las Palmas.

Los Leones squandered the lead twice as goals from Vicente Gomez and Tana cancelled out Aritz Aduriz’s penalty and Inaki Williams’ finish midway through the second half, and the Coach lamented his side’s failure to dominate the new boys.

“We have moved up a position and are already in Europe,” he said after the game.

“In that sense, we’ve fulfilled our objective, but we weren’t comfortable [against Las Palmas].

“We dominated at times, and although their goals came from unclear phases of play, we weren’t truly dominant like we tend to be at San Mames.

“We didn’t apply enough pressure, neither were we able to control the game. Las Palmas ate up a lot of ground.

“[The Copa del Rey game] would have been a good excuse, but it’s not one, not at all.

“I don’t want to take anything away from our opponents.

“We weren’t able to master them and they played well.”
