Ernesto Valverde highlighted the significance of “three important points” after Athletic Bilbao’s 1-0 victory over Celta on Wednesday.
A goal from Raul Garcia midway through the second half was enough to decide a tight game in Los Leones’ favour and move them to within four points of the Galicians in La Liga, and the Coach was delighted with his side’s scalp.
“It was a very difficult game, with a lot of tension,” he said after the game.
“The result was the best thing, mostly because the game was very even, which was played at a very high speed.
“It seemed that great danger could arise in either box, but then it became clear that it was a game of few chances.
“There was tremendous equality in the game, but we unbalanced things with the goal and protected our lead for three important points.
“Celta are a team who are having an extraordinary season, playing very well and have some very important players, especially in the final third.
“It was a very important match for Celta not to potentially fall 10 points [behind Barcelona], and we succeeded [in them doing so].”
