‘Copa a chance for Sporting squad’

Sporting Gijon Coach Abelardo has confirmed he will make changes for the Copa del Rey game against Real Betis, calling it a ‘revalidation.’

The sides meet in the first leg at Benito Villamarin and Abelardo told a pre-match Press conference that the League remains his priority, but he won’t wash his hands with the Cup either.

“The weekend’s game is important but we will try to go through in the Cup. It’s a revalidation for players, who should prove me wrong,” the trainer is quoted as saying by Estadio Deportivo.

“We want players who haven’t been getting League minutes. It’s a competition that comes in handy in this regard.

“Betis are a strong team, in the Primera like us, and have a lot of resources because they have a big squad which was strengthened well in the summer.

“It’ll be hard but we’re hopeful of getting a good result in Seville to win the tie. We won’t go there as tourists because we want to win.

“It will be emotional to be back at Benito Villamarin after what we experienced in June [when Sporting were promoted at Betis].”
