‘Can’t relax on stadium safety’

Miguel Cardenal, the Secretary of State for Sport, says flares during Benfica’s win at Atletico Madrid are a reminder of the need to stay vigilant regarding safety.

Benfica won the game 2-1 and members of the visiting support marked Nicolas Gaitan’s equaliser with pyrotechnics, with some thrown into the home crowd.

“What happened is something extremely serious and we will have a response of equal magnitude,” Cardenal said, AS reports, while Benfica’s President condemned the behaviour.

“I convey again to supporters in Spain an unequivocal commitment to safe environments in stadiums so that you can enjoy the performance with your families.

“It is much better than a year ago, that is clear, but this shows that at no time can we relax and we continue working with fans that are from another country. There hasn’t been a relaxation.”

It’s also reported that Atletico are braced for a punishment for the flares, as they were the home side responsible for security.
