Atletico ‘fear flare punishment’

Atletico Madrid are concerned they could be punished for the behaviour of the Benfica supporters during Wednesday’s Champions League game.

Benfica won 2-1 after Atletico had gone in front and celebrated the visiting fans celebrated the goal by lighting and throwing flares.

The President of the Portuguese club has condemned the behaviour of the supporters but as the home club, Atletico could be sanctioned for allowing the pyrotechnics into the ground in the first place.

A report from AS says that Atletico don’t expect a full stadium closure such as they were subject to after a game against Marseille in 2008.

There is however an expectation at Vicente Calderon that some form of punishment will be forthcoming, despite the security at the ground explaining that the flares were so small to the point they could have been contained within snacks or on the person of a fan.
