‘Celta draw a reference point’

Paco Herrera hopes Las Palmas can use Sunday’s 3-3 draw with Celta Vigo in La Liga as a “reference point” for the rest of the season.

The new boys looked to be heading for a difficult evening at Balaidos after goalkeeper Javi Varas was sent off in just the 11th minute, with the Galicians subsequently taking a 3-1 lead, but they rescued a point thanks to Pablo Hernandez’s own goal and a late finish from David Simon.

“I’m happy and proud of the players,” the Coach said after the game.

“Everything looked very ugly and difficult at one stage, but the team gave more than I thought they could give. They gave 120 percent.

“We must use this match as a reference point to prove that we’re capable of doing great things.

“What I liked is how the team didn’t shrink [in the face of adversity].

“We were able to stand up to a big team like Celta with 10 man and gave them an even-bigger scare in the final few minutes.”
