Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic has revealed that he is still a Sevilla fan – but will only resurrect his affection after Tuesday’s UEFA Super Cup.
The midfielder departed Andalucia last summer for €20m, in the wake of captaining the side to Europa League glory, and he admits he will always hold the club dear to him, although not in Tbilisi next week.
“I have a lot of affection for Sevilla but not in this match,” he said at a Press conference.
“I’ve made it clear enough that I know where I am and will work in the best possible way for my club and fans.
“That means we want to start the season with a trophy, but only after the match will I be a Sevilla fan again.
“I’m still in contact with [Sevilla sporting director Monchi] and also [spoke to him] on the day of my wedding.
“He’s very important in my private life and a person who lives his work wholeheartedly, to the extent that he won’t sleep or eat for five days.
“[His success] is partly due to luck but no accident. I wish him well, but only after our match.”
