Varane: Madrid had no luck

Raphael Varane believes Real Madrid “lacked a little luck” in their failed title tilt this season but is ready to try again next term.

The capital giants thrashed Espanyol 4-1 on Sunday to stay in with an unlikely shout of wrestling the La Liga crown from Barcelona, but their efforts were ultimately in vain as La Blaugrana secured a 1-0 win at Atletico Madrid.

“We’ve always showed our face,” the defender said after the game at Cornella-El Prat.

“We need to give everything until the final game, and we’ll do that against Getafe.

“We wanted to win the title, but sometimes it’s not possible. We’ve given our best, and the team have been very professional.

“There were key moments in the season when we couldn’t pick up important points and we lacked a little luck.

“[Our efforts] weren’t enough. We must congratulate the champions [Barca] because they also did well, but we’ll try to win [the title] again next year.”
