Espanyol star accused of match-fixing

Espanyol captain Sergio Garcia is among the three players named by Angel Vizcay in court to have committed acts of match-fixing last season.

The 1-1 La Liga draw between the Catalans and Osasuna in the penultimate round of 2013-14 has been brought under the microscope by Spain’s Professional Football League [LFP], with the Pamplona side allegedly paying their opponents €250,000 for agreeing to throw the match.

However, as reported by Cadena SER, former Osasuna general manager Vizcay, who was arrested on Thursday, revealed the identities of three players during his testimony in court.

Among them were Garcia, along with then-Osasuna right-back Damia, who now plys his trade for Middlesbrough in the English Championship, and veteran midfielder Patxi Punal.

The radio station also announced that the trio had been included in the LFP’s lawsuit, joining Jordi Figueras and Antonio Amaya, both of whom reportedly met with Vizcay and his ex-right-hand man Txuma Peralta in a Valencian hotel.
