Former Barcelona player Jose Mari Bakero has been offered the chance to replace Andoni Zubizarreta as the club’s sporting director.
According to AS, the 51-year-old, captain of Johan Cruyffs ‘Dream Team’ during the Dutchman’s time in charge, has been contacted by club President Josep Maria Bartomeu and offered the role.
It is understood talks are now underway and if everything is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties Bakero could undertake his new position as early as this weekend.
One stumbling block could prove to be that the position may only last four months as Barca’s elections are due to take place at the end of the season, with a new President almost certain to bring in a new regime.
Bakero hung up his playing boots in 1997 and has subsequently been Head Coach at Malaga B, Real Sociedad, Polonia Warsaw, Lech Poznan and Peruvian outfit Juan Aurich, while he was also a member of Ronald Koeman’s coaching staff at Valencia in 2007.
