Athletic tie over claims Berizzo

Celta Vigo boss Eduardo Berizzo says the Copa del Rey tie is all but over after his side’s 4-2 first-leg defeat to Athletic Bilbao at Balaidos.

Los Leones struck twice in either half to put themselves in pole position for next week’s return leg, with defender Mikel San Jose opening the scoring after just five minutes and Aritz Aduriz heading the visitors back in front 10 minutes later following Alex Lopez’s leveller.

A misplaced header allowed the hosts to equalise a second time, Charles nodding home on 54 minutes, before Markel Susaeta and Aduriz wrapped things up for the Basques.

Berizzo could not hide his disappointment and admitted his players face an uphill task when they visit San Mames.

“We made the kind of mistakes children make and our clearances were awful,” he told reporters at the post-match Press conference.

“The team I chose shouldn’t have conceded four goals and the feeling we have is that this tie is all over, but the errors we made were responsible for Athletic’s goals.

“When you let in two from set-pieces then whatever tactics you have devised go right out of the window.

“That’s an issue we must go away and think about because we didn’t play well as a team. Maybe this group of players are not used to playing together,” he lamented.
