Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has voiced his displeasure at the Spanish Football League (LFP) awards ceremony on Monday night.
Atleti had six players nominated in the different categories – Thibaut Courtois, Felipe Luis, Miranda, Gabi, Koke and Diego Costa – yet despite winning La Liga last season and reaching the Champions League Final they did not manage to pick up a single trophy.
Cerezo spoke to Radio Marca’s ‘Intermedio’ programme and could not hide his anger at the way in which the prizes were distributed.
“Since the ceremony finished I’ve continually taken calls and messages about the awards,” he revealed.
“There is a unanimity about the Atleti players and I want to congratulate Gabi, Koke and Miranda as if it was them that picked up the honours.
“I don’t have anything against the winners, but if we want these awards to be of any importance we’ll need to change the system.
“We are talking about what we consider to be the best League in the world.”
The Atletico President referred to the Ballon d’Or and compared it with the way in which the LFP trophies were decided, whilst also making his opinion known on what his players represent.
“The votes in that competition are public and they come out. In the LFP’s case they are confidential.
“Courtois was the ‘Zamora’, won La Liga and was a Champions League runner-up, while Miranda and Godin are the best centre-back partnership in the world and Koke one of the best players in Europe in his position.”
Boss Diego Simeone was the only Atletico member of staff to pick up an award when he was named Best Coach of the 2013-14 campaign.
