Sanchis: Madrid mistaken over Zidane

Former Real Madrid defender Manolo Sanchis believes the club made a mistake over Zinedine Zidane’s lack of coaching qualifications.

The Frenchman has been hit with a three-month ban for not possessing the necessary licence to coach Madrid’s reserve team Castilla, while Sanchis feels it is something that could have been avoided.

“I think it is an error on the part of the club and it’s a situation that could have been avoided, and I think it [the ban] is fair,” said the 49-year-old in an interview with COPE.

“However, if things haven’t been done right then they haven’t been done right.

“There are some very competent people within the club. [Luis] Ramis could do it perfectly well.”

Sanchis also spoke of Madrid’s victory in last weekend’s Clasico and former teammate Luis Enrique, the current Barcelona boss.

“It was a result that left me very satisfied because Barca are a massive team and it was a tricky start to the game, but Madrid needed a match like that.

“I know Luis Enrique. I like him immensely and he was always one of the most committed in the dressing room, one of those you like to have on your side.

“I’m very fond of him and know he has great ability. Although it is not readily apparent, he is managing the club through an era of change,” explained Sanchis.
