Quico Catalan says everyone at Levante is responsible for boss Jose Luis Mendilibar’s dismissal, particularly the players.
Mendilibar was axed on Monday night after a string of poor results this season and, speaking to reporters after a lengthy board meeting, club President Catalan attempted to explain the decision.
“After myself and director of football Manolo Salvador the Coach has a very great responsibility, but so do the players.
“I hope that when they learn of the decision we have made then each one asks himself what degree of responsibility he has in what has happened. We are all responsible,” he declared.
Catalan admitted Mendilibar’s dismissal resulted from a report sent to him by Salvador and that it was based more on how the team has performed in recent games, rather than their lowly place in the table or the number of points taken.
“We listened to his report, assessed the situation and made the decision. We came to the conclusion we must turn this situation around and that someone else must be at the head of the dressing room.
“We’ve always taken heed of what he has to say. We know what we want and will appoint a successor that way,” added Catalan, who revealed Mendilibar had taken the news with good grace.
“He accepted it like a gentleman and behaved impeccably, given he is a person who knows perfectly well how football works.”
