Raphael Varane believes he and the rest of the Real Madrid defence have to improve to match the level of the team’s attack.
Varane has started Madrid’s last few games in place of the injured Pepe, including Saturday’s 2-0 win over Villarreal at El Madrigal.
Villarreal caused trouble for the eventual winners, though, and speaking to reporters after the match Varane insisted Madrid have to do better.
“In attack we have quality and can score at any time,” he said, AS reports.
“But we must improve our defensive unit. Our opponents get at us too easily. We need to improve this aspect, with work and matches. Together we can do it.”
Varane was nevertheless delighted with the result as well as his recent involvement in the starting XI.
“It’s an important victory. Villarreal are always a difficult game. We were very effective in attack and in defence and hopefully we continue down this path,” the France international continued.
“I always want to play. That’s normal and now I’m on a roll, hopefully I can keep playing and doing my best for the team.
“My job is to do my best whenever I play. If Pepe plays then I hope he does well for the team.
“I had no hesitation in renewing my contract. I feel very good in Madrid.”
