Mario sure of Atletico style

Mario Suarez has advised Atletico Madrid against altering the approach that has delivered success in recent seasons.

It was put to Mario by an interview in AS that the numerous ins and outs at the club over the summer would bring about a new way of playing.

But the home-grown midfielder insisted that wouldn’t change, and also welcomed the presence of an increasing number of youth team players in the side.

“The philosophy and our style of play is going to be the same. We know what’s at stake,” Mario continued.

“There are different players and we must find variations at certain times. But the idea of the game is the same.

“Mono Burgos said the other day that we are not going to change. If you change, in the end you lose.

“Yes, it’s true we have top players with different characteristics. We no longer have Diego Costa but we will have to adapt. The Coach makes sure everything fits well.”

Mario was part of an Atletico midfield comprised entirely of cantera graduates for the first leg of the Supercopa de Espana against Real Madrid, lining up with Gabi, Koke and Saul Niguez.

He admitted it was a pleasure to play with the group but added it was important to get outside influences too.

“It’s always good. The more the merrier. We know this is a place for youngsters,” he confirmed.

“But here is a very good mix. There are outsiders, Spaniards and foreigners, who have done well on other teams.

“The club has brought that leap of quality, and we still have to give 100%, but we’re on the right track.

“Our cantera is one of the best in Spain and this club cares about it very much. There are four of us in the first team and others who train with us who are kicking their way in.”
