Mario: Atleti won’t let up

Mario Suarez has warned his Atletico Madrid teammates not to rely on last season’s success as they defend their League title.

Los Colchoneros beat Real Madrid and Barcelona to La Liga’s top spot and reached the final of the Champions League.

But Mario has told an interview with AS that what the club achieved in 2013-14 isn’t going to help them in the new campaign.

“It was very nice to make history but that is already behind us,” the midfielder admitted.

“We are judged by what we do from now on. We started well, with a trophy [the Supercopa de Espana] and in the League we have four points from a possible six.

“Historically this has been a big club. There was a time when things didn’t go right but since the Coach joined we have been accustomed to playing big games and competing with the best.

“We believed we could win that title and most people didn’t. But it went well.

“We’ve won six trophies in five seasons. It’s what I dreamed of when I was a child.

Mario also revealed he had the chance to leave the club over the summer, adding that he doesn’t hold anything against the players who did choose to move on.

“I know that Koke had offers to leave and so did I. And we both decided to stay,” he went on.

“But it’s to be respected that others like Filipe Luis and Diego Costa, who gave everything for this shirt, decided to leave. I wish them well at Chelsea.

“When I spoke to the club they handed me their trust. I talked to the Coach and he told me I was important here and he wanted me to stay.

“That cleared a few doubts that I had. They made me feel important and I want to repay their trust with hard work.”
