Barca ‘willing to pay Mathieu clause’

Valencia Coach Nuno has suggested Jeremy Mathieu is close to a move to Barcelona after the defender was left out of Los Che’s friendly.

Nuno used 23 players in a 5-1 win over SpVgg Bayreuth, with Mathieu the only one of the first team squad not to get a run out.

The newly-appointed boss said after the match that Mathieu was absent because of the interest of La Blaugrana in his captain.

“The thing about Mathieu is no secret. We know that he is wanted by a great club who are willing to pay the termination clause,” Sport reports Nuno as saying.

“For us the clause is non-negotiable. If there’s a possibility [he could leave] we need to see other options and be prepared for that.

“We love Mathieu and believe he is the best centre-back in the world, but these things happen.”
